New Lights on Human Resources for 2018
RECOGNIZE YOUR PEOPLEBe gracious and grateful. It does not only mean shout outs for every time they make an achievement, big or small required by your company. It also mean treat them as human beings, not only as 'resources" or "means" of achieving company goals. Do you recognize birthdays (as your policy allows within respect of privacy) ? Did you offer a End-of-Year recognition/acknowledgement as a Holiday gathering/meal, a bonus, did you simply say wholeheartedly "enjoy the Holidays ? Or did you only accept your gift from your employees without giving anything in return or did you give yourself a big bonus while ignoring the people who worked for you? Did you recognize the extra mile they took to help you meet your goals, even if your goals were not met? Keep in mind, this is not about performance appraisal, but about effort recognition. Basically: are you grateful for what your Human Resources do for you, and how did you manifest your gratitude? For 2018, make it happen if you missed the mark.
INFORM YOUR PEOPLEThey deserve to know. It is not enough to mention a change. Give them the tools to realize what the change is, how it affects them, and where to find detailed information. If your computer system is enhanced, give them proper training. If Insurance plans change, let them know ahead of time. If the organization structure is tweaked, do them the favor of showing how to know and understand. For example, taxes withholding will change, and pass on some information. Don't be afraid to inform: it will not make you lose your position of power, on the contrary! Uninformed or misinformed employees will be unproductive resources. Communicate appropriately.
PROTECT YOUR HUMAN RESOURCESIt is your obligation. Once you hire them, you take ownership of their work life well-being, so stay informed on related topics. Your human resources are assets and can be liabilities if you make or allow missteps. You are responsible for decent working conditions: keep up with the trends, no extreme temperatures for business sake, no extreme behaviors - on their part, or towards them from any stakeholder -. Risk mitigation and limitation should be observed. Be vigilant in HR practices.. Be open to listening, acting, evaluating, and measuring appropriately. Make sure that you maintain good Human Relations and keep up with changing times.
