HR TRENDS IN THANKSGIVING MODE: HOW DO YOU COMPARE?

Thanksgiving time brings images of friends and family gatherings, in celebration of "good" happenings. In the world of HR new challenges and regulations have brought a wave of changes. How about a quick snapshot of some new trends in HR that ought to bring us thoughts of HR in Thanksgiving mode?

My latest posts were about workplace balance. Overrated? Maybe. See for yourself the general view on the state of  work/life balance ("home, work, and community obligations"). Nevertheless, it is not uncommon to find many HR people appearing to be so unsure about the direction to take when it comes to building internal policies. Here are some HR goodies. See how you do compare or what stand seems attractive to you.

SMALL VERSUS LARGE ORGANIZATIONS

Defining the 2014 National Study of  Employers of the Families and Work Institute (FWI) data:
  1. Small organizations are those of 50 to 99 employees.
  2. Large organizations are those totaling 1,000 employees and more.
  3. If you are a mid-sized employer, that is, if you belong to an organization totaling 100 to 999 employees, you are not in the study. However, the study results could still be of useful reference to you since the results of the mid-category companies fall between those of the two previous groups.
  4. The measurement period is between 2008 and 2014
  5. The study refers to HR practices rather than written policies
Did you know that small employers offer more flexibility than larger ones?  In fact, they lead in the matter, all forms of flexibility considered.

MAJOR EMPLOYEES' TRENDS: The Image of the 2014 Workforce

Workplace/Life balance is important to employees. Demographics, economics, and societal shifts have brought the emergence of new needs for the majority of workers. It varies from different forms of sought flexibility, such as telecommuting and flex-time versus job sharing, to new categories of sought benefits, including paternity leaves. FMLA remains a constant issue. Many employers do not provide the 12 week (unpaid) leave. Maternity leave policy in the US is a shocker if you have a global perspective:  other 185 countries give more than the US.

This leads to new trends in HR varying from concerns of increasing healthcare cost at 79%,  adequacy of skills needed at 73%, to uncertainty and volatlity of the business environment at 66% (SHRM). Technology remains a must know for employees of all levels and businesses of all sizes. It is not only a matter of competitive edge, but also one of sustainability.

Interesting enough, many large employers have started giving 12 weeks of paid leave, aligning themselves to Global standards. Noteworthy and no surprise here: tech companies are leading, offering 16 to 22 weeks of paid leave. Better yet, the offer more than you could have imagined a few years ago: more time for climbing the ladder before becoming a mom...Tunover is observed to improve and some businesses report $89 million savings per year!

So, yes, it is a time of Thanksgiving celebration in HR.
