WORK LIFE / BALANCE DEBATE - Part I: A BUSINESS, A HR, OR PERSONAL CHOICE?

Image
W ork/Life balance exists and is possible for privileged functions. It is undeniably  accessible at both ends of the spectrum: high- and low-end positions, and globally, to a certain extent. The difference is in income stability and real choices . Is work/life balance just empty words or an intellectual speech for some of us? In a SHRM article, it is defined as a myth . So true, it is a matter of priorities. ACC Report- 2014 (on In-House Counsels) TOUCH: THREE ASPECTS OF WORK/LIFE BALANCE   Until you know first hand through one way or another about a specific subject, it is just talk, intellectualized talk. If you have ever been in a French environment, you would know about dwelling into that intellectual talk . Somehow inexplicably satisfying.  So, flexibility, let's talk about it, really: you have to touch and feel it. Then you would be able to say that you know it, from an individual standpoint. There are three major faces of Work/Life Balance. 1- Work/...

CULTURAL DIFFERENCES: ONLY FOR GLOBAL COMPANIES?

Image
T alking about cultural differences is almost vain words until you see the palpable consequences of failed communication . Communication is about getting through your interlocutor. Think Ebola.   www.dailymail.co.uk In general we will agree that the Ebola virus disease (EVD) is not quite understood yet. In practice, there are trends that counteract common sense. Those can be cultural and/or more or less ideological . The major hurdle is getting needed - in this case vital - communication through, as well as timely talent acuisition . This was so unexpected: workers needed !.  Transpose EVD and its impacts on society to a much different and less dramatic scale, and you are encountering global dynamics. Sustainability of multinationals relies a great deal on understanding cultural differences and navigating the cultural and legal, global landscape. UNDERSTANDING ALL FACETS OF CULTURE U nderstanding cultures is essential before implementing any pr...

HR: Where Divides Cross Paths

Image
© 2014 AR_HRCom_HRDivide T he HR world is a busy one where several divides cross paths. We often talk about diversity: the racial, age, gender, lifestyles, physical and mental capacities divides; We live many layers of hierarchies: power divide; We see different applications of company policy: at regional, district, divisional, and local levels, put as administrative divide. As strange as it is, there is also divide among stakeholders : employers, customers, shareholders could have conflicting interests. And recently the digital divide became more apparent with its daily life implications and its link to generational divide. The business world is a puzzle where divides cross paths in, and can be mended by, HR . W ho has not witnessed some type of expression of divides over the past week? I recall at least least two records of divides voiced in two or three organizations, varying to small or large entities. Voices came from various stakeholders. Issues originate...

Toxic Leadership, HR and Challenges

Image
UPDATE: When Employees Volunteer to Fight Toxicity © PatAhern_ AdVision T he subject of toxic leadership is endless. I owe this update to Pat Ahern of AdVision  who brought up the issue of team, leadership and toxicity. Thanks, Pat for reminding me of the importance of this subject. Incidentally, concurrent circumstances made me rethink about the leadership role in team growth. So, yes, toxic leadership can generate quite a toxic environment and harm team spirit in one way or another. As managers become enablers of resistance to change for fear of losing long-time employees, they have a tendency to become irrelevant themselves. Relevancy is not measured by tenure. It is about adaptability, agility, understanding of changed and evolving principles, practices and needs. As a side note, could irrelevancy also be linked to subordination? The terms that define subordination status could certainly impact leadership relevancy . In a way, one can be only as good as he/she is ...

HR: Ladies, It is All about You?

Image
D ramatic and Provocative? Ladies, is it all about You? Is it All About Us? This is a subject that has been "bothering" me for a while. I have encountered so many women in my professional life, and the experience has been enriching, to say the least.  I came to the conclusion that the recent article of Chitra Nayak summs it all: The Invisible Woman Syndrome is the issue. On the opposite side there is charisma Sexism in Employee Relations? Millennials will tell you bluntly that you are sexist if you talk about employees issues specific to women . Gender bias and sexism do certainly exist. more men sharing child-rearing and household responsibilities: women are more vulnerable to specific household concerns. It could be because they are a " sandwich generation " or single parents , or more family- than career--oriented , or just because of "inherent" sociological perspectives . It is an undeniable fact. One thing is also sure although we see mor...
