YOUR NEW HR BRAND: SHRM-CP AND SHRM-SCP

UPDATE

Are you up to date? Have you visited the SHRM page on the whys of the new certification? Unveiled in Florida, at the latest SHRM National Conference, and awaiting accreditation. HR without frontiers.... The new face of HR?

HR evolves, says SHRM. It evolves around People, Organizations, Workplaces and Strategies. Being a HR professional is not only about knowledge. It is also about competencies, says SHRM. Confusing?

What is the definition of a professional? Here is Merriam-Webster's definition: "someone who does a job that requires special training, education, or skill : someone who is a member of a profession". I came across this article about what a true professional is. And this is how SHRM pictures HR competencies to us.

The profession of HR comes in full circle...If you want to keep yourself tuned with the subject...click here.

The latest information on SHRM certification landed in my e-mail, and in yours. It is decided: SHRM is on a big branding campaign. Or maybe the HR profession is rebranding itself? What is your hat going to be?....SPHR vs. SHRM-SCP and PHR vs SHRM-CP

SPHR vs. SHRM-SCP and PHR vs SHRM-CP

One could argue that a certification is a certification. I think that by now many HR professionals have been through the five stages of loss and grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. There is no going back as far as SHRM is concerned. And despite some angry arguments, it is safe to say that SHRM is not going away, just as the AMA or AVMA is there to stay for the medical profession.

Society is being reshaped to one's content or discontent; and so is the HR profession. Can we compare President Obama's latest intervention on FMLA rights  disregarding differing State laws, to the establishment of the new SHRM certification amid much discontent in the HR world? Well. those are two parallel news, both affecting HR practices. Both generate big debates.  If you want a different comparison to compare apples to apples (!?) here is another one: In certain - if not most- business schools around the world that are affiliated with a State University, you will systematically graduate from the University (HRCI?) but you will only graduate from the "School"  if you reach / meet the additional criteria/conditions of graduation (SHRM?). It is similar to graduation with Honors vs. graduating period. Or like Mac vs Windows?  You have to take things with a grain of salt.

YOUR NEW HR BRANDING

After all, maybe it is a winning game for the HR profession. It seems that we are onto a new HR branding:
  • Be domain-certified and gain recognition in your specialty (benefits, etc...).
  • Be HR-certified (HRCI) and be officially, professionally HR-accepted.
  • Be SHRM member and be part of a private club (not all -HRCI- certified get to be SHRM members).
  • Get SHRM-certified and be part of an exclusive group?

MESSAGE from SHRM

"We are designing our certification program to meet the highest standards of the industry and are creating the SHRM Certification Commission in order to ensure that there is no conflict of interest between exam development and certification preparation......
......please continue to visit www.shrmcertification.org for all of the latest SHRM certification information.  Please address all questions you may have about this announcement to shrmcertification@shrm.org."
